Here’s an easier explanation of BeatPower, which is how we go from the Beatpath graph to the Power Rankings. Take a look at the results for after Week 9 of the 2005 NFL Season: And the beatloops that were taken out of the graph: ARI=>SF=>STL=>ARI TEN=>BAL=>CLE=>TEN TEN=>HOU=>CLE=>TEN PHI=>OAK=>DAL=>PHI PHI=>KC=>WAS=>PHI BUF=>MIA=>NO=>BUF BUF=>NYJ=>TB=>BUF MIN=>NO=>CAR=>MIN NO=>CAR=>GB=>NO MIA=>DEN=>KC=>MIA MIA=>CAR=>TB=>MIA [...]
One of the most common questions I get is whether Beatpaths.com is also interested in attempting to rank teams from other sports. The answer is: Absolutely! I’m curious how it will work with college football, where there aren’t many shared opponents, and with basketball/baseball, where there are a ton of shared opponents. Will it be [...]
Beatpaths.com was written up in a hilarious King Kaufman article over at salon.com today. You have to watch an ad to read it (if you’re not a member), but here’s an excerpt: What’s a beatpath? Search me. Here’s the explanation: “If a team beats another team, who beats a third team, and it doesn’t become [...]
And, we’re ready for the new power rankings. A couple of big games and the demolishment of a couple of beatloops made the graph much more vertical this week. Indianapolis and Carolina made statements this week, and Washington – for now, anyway – seems to have the edge in the NFC East. Here’s the graph [...]
Update: Washington beat Philadelphia. And whoa, this one game made quite a difference. It also further adjusts the power rankings. Movements of more than three slots: Up: CAR, WAS, NE, CHI, CLE, MIN Down: DAL, PHI, ARI, NYJ, MIA New beatpath graph and full power rankings will come out after the NE/IND game. Check out [...]
I think we’re ready to transition from a “beta” power ranking to a “release candidate” power ranking. In the beta series, the power ranking stuck to a “King Of The Hill” approach, where it was difficult for a team to sink in the rankings unless another team developed a beatpath over them. All in all, [...]
Here’s a new graph style. Unfortunately, to get text and images together, I had to upgrade to a new version of the software that doesn’t have anti-aliasing enabled yet. Hopefully that improvement will come soon.
Each week, the beatpath graph gets more interesting. There are more beatloops to obliterate, and longer beatpaths to break apart. Here’s a quick look at each of the games. We’ll look at each one as if it’s the only game played – in reality, the combination of games will have more unpredictable effects on the [...]
Here’s a variation on the sorting algorithm I use to sort the graph into power rankings. Find all the teams that don’t have beatlosses. For Week 8, that is DEN, IND, SEA, CAR, NYG, and ATL. Then out of those, find the team that was ranked highest last week. Add that team to the power [...]
