2007 Week 1 “Pure” Power Rankings

The power rankings I put up in the last entry were from having Week 1′s games mixed in with all of the games from last season.

But just to try it out, I ran the power rankings for Week 1′s games alone. You diehards might remember that the very last tiebreaker is to defer to the previous week’s rankings. This tiebreaker is almost never reached late in the season, but for week 1, it was checked on practically every ranking slot. It’s actually really easy in this case – it’s basically ordering the sixteen winners by last season’s rankings, and then the sixteen losers.

What’s interesting is that the rankings really don’t look all that out of whack, with a couple of exceptions. The two advantages are that none of the victories are contradicted (a team is always ranked ahead of the team they beat in Week 1), and… these power rankings were actually more accurate in picking the victories in Week 2. Not that that’s the point of this, but, you know. Fun when that happens. I’ll actually use these rankings for the “prior week” rankings in Week 2′s rankings.

I tried refiguring after every elimination, like so that New Orleans was eligible for ranking as soon as Indianapolis was ranked (which led to NO being ranked 6th as opposed to 20th), but the rankings were actually less accurate.

Beatpath graph for week 2 coming after MNF. It’s already interesting!
