And, here we are, closing the books on another NFL season! This one has a much more satisfying outcome than last season, when the NY Jets was making everyone here gnash their teeth. Although I would argue that this season repairs last season a bit, as both the NY Jets and Brett Favre ended up being a wee bit better than people thought they were at the end of last season.
New Orleans defeats Indianapolis, and sits atop by the rankings by a healthy margin. They have beatpaths to every team in the league except for San Diego, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, and (oddly) the NY Giants. Loops after the jump!

Humm. Seems awfully quiet here, especially since the 2010 NFL season is underway. Have beatpaths fallen by the wayside?
Likewise. I keep checking in, but no updates. What’s become of my beloved beatpaths?
I’m running mine this year still. The site I get my scores from finally updated today so graphs should be up around 10:30 AM Eastern.
Week 1 graphs are up. BeatGraphs.com
Naturally there’s no difference between Iterative and Weighted graphs at this point. We need to wait until the first loops of the season until things get interesting.
Week 2 is up. Hopefully TT will show up again soon.
I’m building a slightly different ranking system this year. It’s similar to The MOOSE’s ranking system; however, a team only gets half credit for its defeated opponents’ wins and vice versa, and beatloops are not removed.
For example, after week 2: NYJ->NE->CIN->BAL->NYJ.
Thus, NYJ gets 1 (NYJ->NE) + 0.5 (NE->CIN) + 0.25 (CIN->BAL) + 0.125 (BAL->NYJ) + … = 2 win points. Similarly, it has 2 loss points. 2/(2+2) = 0.500, a perfectly average rating.
In my opinion, this system has a couple of advantages. Because the value of a win decreases the longer the beatpath, a team gets more for consistently beating good teams than for beating a single great team (which might be a fluke). Also, because beatloops are not removed, if a team is in a beatloop it gains fractional points recursively for both wins and losses, pushing it closer to the center (as it should be).
Week 2 rankings are:
1.000 PIT (3.5 – 0)
1.000 HOU (3.25 – 0)
